Located in the heart of Málaga province, the Sierra de las Nieves is one of southern Spain’s most striking natural landscapes, defined by powerful contrasts between deep gorges and mountains rising above 2,000 metres, including La Torrecilla, the highest peak in the area. This mountain range is a prime example of karst terrain in the western Betic system, shaped by thousands of years of geological activity. Its landscape features cliffs, sinkholes, poljes, travertine formations, caves and chasms, creating one of the most complex underground cave systems in Andalusia. Notable sites include Sima Honda, Cueva de la Tinaja, Sima del Aire and Sima Prestá. Water plays a central role in the scenery, from natural springs to the sulphurous baths of Tolox. The sharp ridgelines are also home to the world’s largest outcrops of peridotite, a rare magmatic rock rich in iron and magnesium, whose green, brown and reddish tones give the mountains of Corona and Abanto their distinctive appearance. The Sierra de las Nieves is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting around 1,500 plant species, including 19 endemic to the Ronda area. Its most iconic tree is the Spanish fir (pinsapo), a living botanical relic found only in a few mountain ranges of southern Spain. At different altitudes, this fir shares space with gall oak forests, rare teak stands, juniper shrublands and hardy high-mountain vegetation adapted to harsh winters. Wildlife is equally rich. While the mountain goat is the most emblematic species, the park is especially important for birdlife, with over 120 species recorded, including numerous birds of prey. During migration periods, large groups of honey buzzards and black kites can be observed. The area is also notable for its invertebrates, bat populations, endemic amphibians and freshwater fish found only in local river systems.
