About Conservatorio Superior de Música de Málaga
The Málaga Superior Conservatory of Music, established in 1880 under the direction of Mr. Eduardo Ocón y Rivas, holds a distinguished place in Spanish musical education, historically recognized as one of the elite higher conservatories by the Ministry of Education. Its early location was the venerable Convent of San Francisco, a late 15th-century building, before relocating in 1971 to its current site on the El Ejido University Campus, a structure designed with a notable rationalist aesthetic by architect Enrique Atencia Molina 🏛️. Beyond its role in teaching, the Conservatory is directly responsible for enriching the city's entire musical landscape. It was the parent institution for the creation of the Málaga Symphony Orchestra in 1945—one of Spain's oldest ensembles, now the Provincial Symphony Orchestra—which cultivated an enthusiastic and demanding local fanbase. This foundational influence is credited with fostering the subsequent development of numerous stable orchestras, choirs, and chamber music groups that today form the rich and vibrant cultural reality of Málaga.
