About Teatro del Soho CaixaBank
🎭 The site now occupied by Teatro del Soho CaixaBank has been closely linked to leisure and culture in Málaga for more than a century, evolving alongside the city’s artistic life. 🎬 In 1907, the Cine Pascualini settled on what is now Calle Córdoba, becoming a gateway for major American film productions in Málaga before being destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. In the following decades, the plot hosted the Palacio de Cristal amusement park, the Terraza Alameda open-air cinema, and even circus tents, maintaining its role as a popular cultural gathering point. 🏛️ In 1961, the building that housed the Teatro-Cine Alameda was constructed and inaugurated with the opera La serva padrona. Contemporary chronicles described it as a grand venue dedicated to theater and cinema, combining modern design, elegance, and good taste. 📜 Over more than sixty years, the Alameda underwent renovations and changes in management while remaining the only large-format private theater in Andalusia, a unique position it continues to hold today. ✨ In 2019, the space entered a new chapter with the creation of Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, founded and promoted by Málaga-born actor, director, and producer Antonio Banderas as a non-profit private initiative, independent of public funding. 🎶 The theater opened on November 15, 2019, with the musical A Chorus Line, its first own production, co-produced with John Breglio and starring Antonio Banderas as actor, co-director, and producer. The production was a major success, marking the beginning of a new era for the performing arts in Málaga, later interrupted and reshaped by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
