About
🎼 Located at Marqués de Valdecañas Street, 2, the Unicaja Concert Hall María Cristina occupies part of the former San Luis el Real convent, a 15th-century building later turned into a conservatory and, after an extensive restoration, into one of Spain’s most beautiful concert halls. With a capacity of around 360 seats and carefully designed acoustics, it regularly hosts piano recitals, chamber music, jazz, flamenco and international festivals. 🏛️ Rebuilt in 1871 on the remains of the Franciscan monastery and declared a monument and Cultural Heritage (BIC), the venue preserves unique features: the main concert hall occupies the old church nave, with ceilings painted by artists such as Joaquín Martínez de la Vega, José Denis Belgrano and José Nogales; the building also includes the elegant Hall of Mirrors, the Mudejar Hall and a peaceful cloister garden that recalls its monastic origins. 🎹 Thanks to the restoration led by Fundación Unicaja, the hall combines modern lighting, climate control and a superb concert grand piano with original wooden details, historic stuccoes and neoclassical decor. Its programme brings together world-class performers, young talents and local projects, making it a key hub of Malaga’s cultural life. 🎭 Beyond concerts, the venue also offers theatrical guided tours that bring its history to life through characters such as the Marquis of Valdecañas or pianist Rubinstein, helping visitors to discover the building’s convent, conservatory and concert-hall past.
