EL MAR

🎭 El Mar is documentary theatre built around a broken promise: in 1936, teacher Antoni Benaiges vowed to take his rural pupils to see the sea; the Spanish Civil War and his execution prevented it. The piece examines memory, education and hope from a true story. 📚 The show draws on the school printing press and gramophone Benaiges bought himself; in January 1936 the children published El mar. Visión de unos niños que no lo han visto nunca, imagining waves, fears and dreams—source material that feeds the script and staging. 🧩 Onstage, objects, poetry and documentary materials “coexist without hierarchy”, forming an intimate ritual that engages audiences and has earned critical praise on tour. 👥 Playwright: Alberto Conejero (from the pupils’ and teacher’s texts).
