About
Alexis Morate (Algeciras, 1978) holds an honours degree from the University of Cádiz and postgraduate training in Sweden, Cuba’s famed EICTV and a Talentia-funded MFA split between New York and Los Angeles, blending rigorous film scholarship with hands-on craft. His breakout short Somersault (Voltereta) captured the FNAC New Talent Award at the Málaga Film Festival and toured international circuits. In 2017 his inclusive comedy Bla, Bla, Bla earned a Goya nomination for Best Fiction Short, cementing his reputation as a fresh voice in Spanish storytelling. Morate has since specialised in high-profile music and cultural documentaries —Camarón: Flamenco y Revolución, Héroes: Silencio y Rock & Roll, and Is That the Enemy? Gila’s Story— that illuminate Spain’s artistic heritage for global audiences. His triple win at the 2025 Carmen Awards (Best Director, Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Adelfa Calvo) confirmed him as a leading expert and commentator on modern Spanish cinema.
