Europe: From “The Final Countdown” to now—Scandinavia’s arena-rock icons. Europe are a Swedish hard-rock band formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979 by singer Joey Tempest and guitarist John Norum. They broke through by winning the inaugural Rock-SM competition in 1982. Their third album, The Final Countdown (1986), went triple-platinum in the U.S. and topped charts in 25 countries. It spawned arena staples like the title track, “Rock the Night,” and power-ballad “Carrie,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Across eleven studio albums the band have sold over 60 million records, shaping ’80s arena rock and glam metal. After a 1992-2003 hiatus, Europe returned heavier; Walk the Earth (2017) won the 2018 Swedish Grammis for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album. Today the reunited classic line-up continues to headline festivals worldwide with unmistakable Nordic swagger.
