Marco: The Invented Truth – biographical drama on impostor Enric Marco by Garaño & Arregi
Marbella’s Department of Culture, Education & Historic Heritage drives the city’s cultural scene through festivals, film seasons, art workshops and the stewardship of theatres, libraries and historic sites
Set between post-Franco Barcelona and modern Spain, “Marco” follows trade-unionist Enric Marco, who rose to head the Spanish Holocaust Survivors’ Association by recounting horrors he never endured 🎤. When historian Benito Bermejo unmasks the fraud, the film morphs into a gripping meditation on memory, identity and collective guilt 💔. Basque filmmakers Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño—known for Handia and The Endless Trench—blend real footage with dramatic reenactments, driven by Pascal Gaigne’s score and Javi Agirre’s bold cinematography 🎻🎥. Premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 2024 Venice Film Festival and opening in Spanish cinemas on 8 November 2024, the picture positions Eduard Fernández for a fourth Goya win.
