Born in Figueres in 1952 and raised in Seville, Kiko Veneno studied Philosophy before forming Veneno with the Amador brothers, releasing a self-titled cult LP in 1977 that blended blues guitar, Andalusian compás and surreal lyrics. His songwriting reached the masses when Camarón de la Isla recorded “Volando Voy” for La Leyenda del Tiempo (1979), a watershed in flamenco fusion. After a decade of touring Spain’s underground circuit he signed to BMG and delivered the platinum album Échate un cantecito (1992), spawning radio staples “Echo de Menos”, “Joselito” and “Lobo López”. Follow-ups such as Dice la Gente (2010) and Sombrero Roto (2019) kept his catalogue fresh, while Hambre (2021) earned rave reviews for its electronic textures. His honours include Spain’s Gold Medal for Fine Arts (2009) and the National Prize for Contemporary Music (2012). In parallel he co-founded the super-group G-5 (with Muchachito, Tomasito, El Canijo de Jerez & Diego “Ratón”), which returns in 2025 with a new album and summer shows. Today Veneno averages 15–20 concerts a year, with upcoming 2025 dates in Valencia, Málaga and Barcelona, according to Songkick and Hypebot. His Spotify profile registers 640 K monthly listeners and playlists led by “Los Tontos”, “Lobo López” and “Volando Voy”. At 73, he remains a sharp cultural commentator, as reflected in a wide-ranging 2025 interview in El País where he praises Serrat and criticises Spain’s music industry.
