About Square Hermita del Calvario
Just a few steps from the whitewashed Ermita del Calvario—built by the Franciscans in the 18th century and now cared for by the María Santísima del Calvario Brotherhood—lies this peaceful pedestrian square named after it. Its rectangular layout, cobblestone paving, and the shade of orange and jacaranda trees make it a quiet oasis just minutes from Marbella's Old Town. The Cofradía del Calvario Brotherhood House stands on one side, bringing the square to life throughout the year with band rehearsals, religious processions, and local gatherings. In summer, the square transforms into an open-air venue: the Brotherhood sets up a screen and seating for family-friendly movie nights (Cine de Verano) and charity events, with affordable pricing and a refreshment bar that draws locals and tourists alike. The City Council has also announced plans for a multipurpose center that will respect the chapel's aesthetics and serve as a space for exhibitions, workshops, and storage for religious floats—ensuring the square continues to grow as a cultural hub for the neighborhood. Thanks to its elevated location, the plaza offers partial views of the Sierra Blanca mountains and has become a must-visit spot for photo walks, religious heritage tours, and summer evenings spent under the stars.
